Description: 59% of total water consumption in developed countries is destined for industrial use, 30% for agricultural use and 11% for domestic consumption, as stated in the first report of the United Nations on the development of the water resources of the world, Water for People, Water for Life (March 2003). It is estimated that by the year 2025, the consumption of water for industrial use will reach 1,170 km3/year, which in 1995 stood at 752 km3/year. The production sector is not only the biggest spender; also it is the biggest polluter. More than 80% of the hazardous waste in the world is produced by industrialized countries, while in developing countries 70% of the waste generated in factories is poured directly into water without any previous treatment, polluting available water resources.

These data provide an idea of the value that treatment and reuse of sewage water have in world industrial sector, and even more so in countries which seal off their balance of water resources in red numbers. The proper treatment of industrial wastewater and its reuse for multiple uses contributes to sustainable water consumption and environmental regeneration of the hydraulic and maritime public domain and their ecosystems, not to mention that water quality is a critical raw material for industry.
